5 Terrific Plants to Surround Your Jacuzzi

With spring nearly here, it’s time to start thinking about bringing your backyard back to life. There are some great plants ideas to enhance your landscaping and give you some nature to enjoy while you soak in your Jacuzzi. Here are some things to consider when you get ready to break out the garden tools and refresh your space.

  • Bamboo can be terrific to add height to your hot tub environment, as well as create a natural screen for privacy from neighbors. It might be best to plant bamboo in pots to avoid it taking over too much of your backyard.
  • Fragrant plants can give you an entirely different kind of aromatherapy when you take a soak. If you have an area that tends to get a lot of sunlight, lavenders and lilacs would delight your olfactory senses. You could also choose fragrant shrubs such as Sweet Box that do well in shaded areas.
  • Sunflowers and mop head hydrangeas can add some texture and shape interest to your hot tub space. There’s nothing like cheery sunflowers to add a bright spot!
  • Hanging baskets with a variety of plants that have a mix of seasonal blooms attached to adjacent posts or fencing is another way to give depth to your Jacuzzi garden area.
  • When you plan your backyard space near your hot tub, be sure to avoid fruit trees. Best to keep those relegated to a space in your yard away from the tub to limit any bees or wasps that could be attracted to the fruit trees also deciding that the hot tub water is a good place to hang out as well.

Are you ready for spring? We are!

How About Glamping in a Treehouse with a Hot Tub & Sauna?

This is a terrific way to spend part of a vacation to England, re-live part of your childhood and enjoy adult amenities in one fell swoop: The Woodsman’s Treehouse.

In the midst of the pretty magical oak trees in Dorset, England you’ll find a treehouse one would many describe as the ultimate glamping experience. Guy Mallinson put a lot of thought and effort into building a perfect weekend retreat. And, what retreat would be complete without its very own hot tub and rooftop sauna?

Costing a mere £150,000 (or over $185,000!), you’ll find the perfect marriage of rustic woodsy feel along with adult niceties anyone would love: a wood-fired pizza oven, places to charge your cell and other devices, Wi-Fi, heated towel rails in the bathroom, as well as the aforementioned hot tub and sauna.

To help keep things on the camp/glamping theme, you’ll not find a TV. Instead, you’ll find a variety of board games including Monopoly, Backgammon, Scrabble and Jenga. While there is a lovely queen size bed, you might choose to take a siesta in the hammock on the treehouse main deck. Warm up near the rotating fireplace…and, when it’s time to return to earth, you might want to just travel from the treehouse down to the ground on the stainless steel slide!

Next time you’re headed to England, you might want to check it out. It sounds like a terrific way to spend a novel weekend in Britain. But, be prepared to invest a bit in the stay—depending on the time of year, your weekend retreat could cost anywhere from $975 to nearly $2,000.

Could Japan Have its Own Spamusement Park??

How crazy is this? Beppu, a city known the world over for its natural hot springs, might be developing the world’s first spa-themed amusement park!

Yasuhiro Nagano, the city’s mayor, stated that a promotional video posted on Facebook would serve as the catalyst for moving forward with the development of the park. If the video received a million views, they would move ahead with plans to build it.

Beppu Rakutenchi Park was the site used to film the video. If you haven’t seen it yet, you definitely need to check it out! In the video, visitors to the park clad only in towels walk barefoot from attraction to attraction in the new park. Cable cars with built-in tubs filled with hot spring water, bathing pools, gaming areas styled as steam rooms—even a rollercoaster is depicted with riders in cars filled with hot water!

Don’t worry about watching the video to help it hit the million views mark. Only four days after the video was posted it had already been watched 1.8 million times! Hence, the mayor has a lot of work ahead of him to get the park plans completed and construction underway.

If this indeed becomes a reality, it would certainly be a unique vacation destination that only the Japanese could bring to life. And, what avid hot tubber wouldn’t want a chance to see it in person?

The Secret to Good Sleep is Your Jacuzzi & Sauna

November is National Sleep Comfort month. It’s well known that getting a good night’s sleep is key to our bodies and our minds. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that an estimated 50-70 million adults in the U.S. experience a sleep or wakefulness disorder! They also noted that those who experience a sleep deficit are more prone to suffer from chronic diseases: hypertension, depression, obesity & diabetes among those cited.

Getting 7-8 hours of sleep as an adult seems to be the key average to get recharged and feel refreshed, alert and productive during the day.

If you do have trouble getting to sleep and having a restful night of slumber with fewer wakeup interruptions, your Jacuzzi or sauna could very well be the key.

When you soak in a hot tub or take a sauna about 45 minutes to one hour before you hit the sheets, you’ll discover you will not only feel more relaxed, you’ll also be setting your body up for success to get that much-needed shut-eye.

A number of things happen to your body and mind when you make a hot tub soak or sauna session part of your getting-ready-to-go-to-sleep routine:

  • Your body will experience an increase in endorphins, the body’s “feel good” chemical. This will help improve mood, as well as relax your body and set you up for a great night’s sleep.
  • Soaking in hot water or a toasty sauna will elevate your body’s core temperature. In about 45 minutes, your body will start to cool off and regulate. This cooling off triggers the mind that it’s time to rest. You’ll not only fall asleep faster, but also achieve REM sleep quicker. You’ll also likely find yourself sleeping more successfully throughout the night.
  • Because both the sauna and Jacuzzi will release muscle and joint tension, you’ll find that you’ll wake up refreshed with fewer of the morning aches many of us often experience.

If you haven’t made your Jacuzzi or sauna part of your nightly sleep prep routine, give it a try! You’ll be amazed at the difference it will make in achieving a successful night of rest.

Pleasant dreams!

Help your Body Adjust to Daylight Savings with Your Jacuzzi

I’m not sure about anyone else, but it appears the older I get, the longer it takes my body to re-adjust once we either fall back or spring ahead the clocks for daylight savings. The fall adjustment seems to take a particular toll on me for some reason.

One thing that seems to help my body adjust is the Jacuzzi. Soaking about an hour or so before bedtime helps with falling asleep and achieving REM sleep faster. For about a week before we turn the clocks back, I also adjust my soaking time to one hour earlier. Normally I hit the hot tub around 10:30 each night, but the week before daylight savings I try to get my soak started between 9:30 and 10:00.

By the time we actually turn the clock back, my body’s already somewhat adjusted to the new soak time, and my sleep cycles tend to suffer much less interruption.

This year, you’ll need to adjust your clocks before heading to bed on Saturday, November 5th for the official turn back on Sunday at 2 a.m. For the rest of this week, experiment with soaking in your Jacuzzi an hour earlier than normal—and don’t miss a night! Hopefully you’ll experience less of the bio-adjustment to the new time cycle.

Happy soaking, and happy fall!

Embrace the Rain by Soaking in Your Jacuzzi!

So…fall is here. With that comes the usual onslaught of rainier days and nights. Don’t let a rainy day dissuade you from using your Jacuzzi! It’s absolutely one of the best ways to ward off any gloomy feelings gray days can bring on for many.

All you need to do is be ready for a rainy hot tub soak! Here are a few smart ways to make sure you can embrace soaking in the rain.

  • Shield yourself. Oregonians have perfected the portable umbrella—it’s called a ball cap. Pop one on your head when you trot out to the tub for a soak. It’ll help keep your head warm and shield you from the rain.
  • Soak with a friend! It’s pretty great to have someone join you in the tub during a rainy night. It’s a great time to sit and chat—or just relax and listen to the pitter patter of raindrops on the surface of the water and the surrounding foliage.
  • Have something toasty to drink. Get your favorite insulated travel mug, fill it up with some yummy spiced cider or hot cocoa and sip it during your soak. You’ll have the Jacuzzi warming up your body, and your drink getting you warm and cozy on the inside.
  • Plan ahead before your soak. Toss your favorite robe and towel into the dryer on low heat. They’ll be warm and welcoming when you come inside from your soak and will absolutely feel terrific!
  • Make it fun! Add aromatherapy to the water, play your favorite music, bring water-proof playing cards to the tub for a good ol’ card game…there’s plenty you can do to make the most of a rainy day soak.

Is it raining right now…? Must be time for the Jacuzzi!

Give hot tub yoga a try

Hey yoga lovers! If you have ever thought about giving hot tub in your yoga a try, rejoice! Swim University has created “Hot Tub Yoga for Beginners”.

Some of us, as we age, can find some of the bending, stretching & balancing associated with yoga to become more difficult to achieve. But, when you add in the buoyancy of hot water to the mix, many yoga positions will again be within your grasp. The hot water will also help keep you limber, and also aid in preventing a lot of post-yoga muscle ache. It may just be the ticket for you!

The certified yoga instructor uses Hatha Yoga as the basis for the regimen. In the video (available for purchase), she will take you from a variation of a Sun Salutation warm up on to a number of positions: Bandhas, Drishti, Warrior One & Two, Side Plank, Seated Chair Twist, East Pose, Airplane Pose, Tree Pose, and Seated Leg Raise. More positions complete the session and finishes up with a five minute cool down.

What a terrific new way to embrace healthy living in the privacy of your own back yard! If you have friends you normally attend yoga with, you might want to consider making this a weekly event at your home.

Take a look here at Hot Tub Yoga (https://www.swimuniversity.com/introducing-hot-tub-yoga-video/). Let us know how your hot tub yoga sessions progress! We’d love to hear about it.

Make good ol’ BBQ chicken for Labor Day on your Big Green Egg

Can you believe Labor Day is nearly here?? It’s hard to believe summer is nearly behind us and it will soon be ready for some of the crisp fall nights ahead. Before that happens, the holiday weekend will afford yet another opportunity to break out the Big Green Egg and produce some mouth-watering treats for everyone to enjoy.

What could be better that some good old BBQ chicken? (We can’t think of anything!) Here’s a great recipe we came across using Dr. Pepper to make up the sauce. Why not give this a try and celebrate the weekend with friends, family, great food and great weather? Enjoy!

Dr. Pepper BBQ Chicken

What you’ll need for the sauce

  • 2 cups Dr. Pepper
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • ½ cup pulp-free orange juice
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp chipotle chili powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes

Make it

  • Mix the Dr. Pepper, ketchup, orange juice, Worcestershire sauce & molasses in a medium saucepan. After mixed, add the rest of the ingredients and bring the sauce to a boil over high heat. Reduce to medium-low heat and let the sauce simmer for at least 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Heat your Egg to medium high and lightly oil the cooking grid.
  • Place trimmed chicken breasts or other chicken pieces on the Egg and grill for 10-15 minutes on each side, brushing the Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce on each piece every time you turn them. Gill until the chicken is cooked through and the juices run clear.
