Make good ol’ BBQ chicken for Labor Day on your Big Green Egg

Can you believe Labor Day is nearly here?? It’s hard to believe summer is nearly behind us and it will soon be ready for some of the crisp fall nights ahead. Before that happens, the holiday weekend will afford yet another opportunity to break out the Big Green Egg and produce some mouth-watering treats for everyone to enjoy.

What could be better that some good old BBQ chicken? (We can’t think of anything!) Here’s a great recipe we came across using Dr. Pepper to make up the sauce. Why not give this a try and celebrate the weekend with friends, family, great food and great weather? Enjoy!

Dr. Pepper BBQ Chicken

What you’ll need for the sauce

  • 2 cups Dr. Pepper
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • ½ cup pulp-free orange juice
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp chipotle chili powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes

Make it

  • Mix the Dr. Pepper, ketchup, orange juice, Worcestershire sauce & molasses in a medium saucepan. After mixed, add the rest of the ingredients and bring the sauce to a boil over high heat. Reduce to medium-low heat and let the sauce simmer for at least 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Heat your Egg to medium high and lightly oil the cooking grid.
  • Place trimmed chicken breasts or other chicken pieces on the Egg and grill for 10-15 minutes on each side, brushing the Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce on each piece every time you turn them. Gill until the chicken is cooked through and the juices run clear.

Use a hot tub to help manage Type 2 Diabetes

I was speaking to one of my relatives a few weeks ago who has Type 2 Diabetes. While we’ve had this conversation before, I had to remind them that one of the ways blood sugar levels can be managed is by regular hot tub soaking. After speaking with her, I realized that, while this is a well-known documented fact to those of us in the hot tub industry, it still escapes most folks out there who live with Diabetes. So, we’re here to remind you: a hot tub can help!

The New England Journal of Medicine published a study way back in 1999. In the study, it was determined that hot tub therapy helped reduce blood sugar levels. One of the reasons it was deemed effective is hot water immersion helps stimulate the beneficial effects of exercise.

The study required use of a hot tub for a minimum of thirty minutes a day six days a week. After three weeks in the study, patients averaged a natural reduction in blood sugar levels of 13%! One participant actually reduced daily insulin intake by 18% after just ten days in the study.

Since hot tubbing also mimics some of the positive attributes of exercise without the need for physical exertion, it can be beneficial for folks with physical limitations that prevent regular exercise.

Obviously, before pursuing this as part of your health plan, you should make a visit to your physician and make sure this is a recommended course of therapy. If you’re given a green light, why wouldn’t regular hot tub soaking be a great avenue to help manage Diabetes!

Use your swim spa to get an Olympian physique

It’s that time of year when once again nature bestows on us one of the most striking displays ideal for enjoying from your hot tub. Perseids is coming this Thursday & Friday on August 11th & 12th. And, this year all indicators point to a truly terrific show!

The optimal time this year for getting the greatest show will be Thursday evening into the early hours of Friday morning. If you’re willing to stay up late into the night, the young moon will set at 1:09 a.m. and give you a better night sky setting for meteor sighting.

According to the International Meteor Organization, if you’re willing to invest that late night viewing time you could be in for quite a treat. Normally, when Perseid arrives in August it offers up about 50-100 shooting stars in an hour. This year, however, predictions are pointing to an unusually exciting show of up to 150 meteors an hour! Some astronomers think it could even hit the 200 mark.

If the night sky cooperates and you get a clear vantage point from your hot tub, you could absolutely celebrate summer in a special way. Since viewing is best with as little light cutting your star show, be sure you soak with your hot tub’s lighting off and any exterior house lighting off as well. The darker the environment, the better your chances for a truly stunning show.

Of course, Perseid’s arrival also means that summer is starting to wind down and fall will soon be upon us. Make the most of the remaining time to enjoy our terrific Northwest nights.

Happy Perseids! And happy soaking!
