Treat yourself to this summer’s best meteor gazing from your Jacuzzi

meteor-showerOne of the best parts of late summer is the show put on in the heavens each year. There is nothing quite like heading out to the hot tub late at night and taking in the night sky and the meteor showers that only happens at this time of year.

While lesser known, one meteor shower will be at its peak tonight into early tomorrow morning. The Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. While the nearly full moon might make it a challenge to see some of the brighter meteors in the shower, you should still be able to catch sight of a few good ones. Just before midnight till about 1:30 a.m. will likely afford you the best viewing opportunity. While the meteors radiate from the constellation Aquarius, they can appear anywhere in the nighttime heavens, so keep a sharp eye out!

Of course, the big daddy of meteor events is just around the corner. The Perseids Meteor Shower is such a treat every August. This show radiates from the constellation Perseus. Again, you should be able to see meteors anywhere in the night sky. This shower can produce up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. While the shower runs this year from July 17th to August 24th, optimal viewing will be at the prime period in the late hours of August 12th into the early morning hours of August 13th. Head out to the hot tub around 11:30 p.m. to take full advantage of this light show. Fortunately, since the moon will be sliver thin (the New Moon arrives August 14th), its light will not impede on the meteor viewing.

As always, get the area for viewing as dark as possible for the show. Leave the hot tub lights off, and leave all exterior lighting off as well. It will give you the ideal environment to take in an exciting natural event that is really a treat to behold from the watery bliss of your hot tub!

Enjoy the show!

Today is National Nude Day…How do you celebrate?

J500_cmyk0398_720x479_72_CMYKYes, this really is a thing! July 14th is National Nude Day in America. Apparently the first National Nude Day in America was observed in 1976. The idea was to give everyone a chance to cool off on hot summer days. (Really, that’s the reasoning!)

There has long been an unwritten “modesty clause” in American culture regarding nudity—one certainly not found in many European countries to be sure. Over the years, enclaves have been established where public nudity is acceptable—nude beaches of course come to mind. Some events have even emerged to celebrate nudity, including World Naked Bike Ride events and the Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco. And…guess what? Public nudity is legal and protected in Oregon as free speech!

Where are we going with this? Well, it brings up the age old question of whether being nude or not nude in your hot tub is acceptable. Our friends at Olympic Hot Tub in Seattle posed this question over 30 years ago to its customers. In fact, the responses were even reported on in John Hinterberger’s column in The Seattle Times in the early ‘80’s!

The results of the survey way back then found that 94% of respondents indeed used their hot tub in the buff. When the survey was conducted a second time in 1999, the results were very similar.

It would seem that the experience of escaping to your own little corner of nature in your back yard and enjoying a soak in your hot tub au natural makes one feel relaxed and free (for a short time anyway) of all life’s limitations.

You may not choose to celebrate this little known holiday…but if you do, we hope you enjoy part of it in your Jacuzzi!

Happy soaking.

A swim spa can help with knee replacement rehabilitation

19fX_mainYowza! Did you know that about 700,000 Americans get knee replacement surgery performed each year? Knee replacement procedures can lay you up for some time, and the key to getting back on your feet (literally) and doing so with good mobility and without pain is to do good consistent rehabilitative therapy post-surgery. I’ve known a number of people who have had knee replacements done, and there’s no shortage of stories of how painful and difficult the rehabilitative process can be.

If you have a swim spa or have one available to you, it can really aid in your rehabilitation. More and more patients are being urged to incorporate aquatic therapy for knee surgery recovery. The buoyancy of water relieves pressure on sensitive joins during the healing process, allowing for strength rebuilding. The floating environment also assists in stretching exercises beneficial to increase mobility.

Working the joint is key to the rehab process. A lot of patients experience pain and swelling while performing exercises to strengthen the knee and work the joint. Performing those exercises in a swim spa helps ease the pain and also helps reduce swelling.

Exercises that can help with knee replacement rehabilitation in a swim spa:

  • Gentle squats (these will help warm up the joints)
  • Hamstring stretches
  • Hamstring lunges
  • Knee extensions
  • Walking at a slow pace

The buoyancy from the water in and of itself will make performing all these exercises much easier. It will help you get back to your normal routine much more quickly and back to enjoying life!
